Riding the Wave of Innovation
NBIA's 25th International Conference on Business Incubation was held April 10-13, 2011, in San Jose, Calif. The event featured sessions on the future of the industry, best practices in incubation, coaching clients, helping entrepreneurs find investors and much more. Incubation and economic development professionals from around the world gathered to learn, share ideas, network with colleagues and have a little fun.
Highlights of the conference included:
- Tours of the Plug and Play Tech Center, the Environmental Business Cluster and the San Jose Biocenter
- Keynote addresses by Thomas Guevara, deputy assistant secretary for regional affairs for the U.S. Economic Development Administration; Robert Shelton, director of the global growth and innovation practice at PRTM Management Consultants and co-author of Making Innovation Work; and Tim Brown, CEO and president of IDEO
- The opportunity to network with peers, especially through the Opening Reception and NBIA Expo, Tech Museum Reception and Vendor Mixer
- NBIA's annual awards luncheon

The Environmental Business Cluster provides commercialization support for emerging clean energy and environmental technology companies. Clients receive coaching and strategic counsel, focused educational and networking programs, access to investors and more. The Environmental Business Cluster won NBIA’s 2008 Randall M. Whaley Incubator of the Year award.
The San Jose BioCenter works with emerging science and technology companies by providing specialized facilities, capital equipment, laboratory services and commercialization support. Since the incubator opened in 2004, BioCenter clients have raised more than $1 billion in capital and have created more than 800 direct jobs. The San Jose BioCenter won NBIA’s 2009 Randall M. Whaley Incubator of the Year award.
