Thursday

Workshop: A Guide to Business Incubation

This half-day workshop is for those new to the industry. If you have questions about developing an incubator, client services or anything else incubation-related, A Guide to Business Incubation is where you can find the answers. Led by experienced industry professionals, this tutorial will help you get your program started on the right track.

Opening Reception

The opening reception will take place at the Silicon Valley Capital Club in downtown San Jose. This private, elegant club provides an ideal setting to kick back and get to know others involved in incubation who live near your area.

Friday

Creating a Dynamic Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: The San Jose Experience

A panel of San Jose incubation professionals will explore the success of San Jose incubators, focusing on what has worked for their programs and what hasn’t. Learn how to create a strong network of incubators in your community.

Breakout Discussions

The group will be divided into sections based on the following topic areas: self-sustainable incubators, marketing an incubator, strategies to increase and maintain client retention, and attracting government investment into incubation programs. Share tips with your peers about what worked for your program and ask others for help with problems you’ve encountered.

Keynote Speaker

Innovation management has changed significantly; old-school approaches are not sufficient to guarantee success. Drawing on his books Making Innovation Work and The Creative Enterprise, as well as recent work with leading companies, Rob Shelton will present examples and describe three key changes affecting incubator management and performance:

  • Innovation is a team sport. Successfully managing an incubator is a question of Know Who, not just Know How. Success depends on internal and external teams, effective collaboration, and well-managed partnerships.
  • The design and operation of the innovation process must match the type of innovation. The new design philosophy used by leading innovators is How you innovate determines what you innovate.
  • Resource management for incubators and all types of innovation requires clear, crisp metrics and meaningful motivators.

San Jose BioCenter Tour

Tour the San Jose BioCenter, the first bioscience incubator with wet lab space in California. This facility had a recent $5 million addition featuring a chemistry analytics lab, biology lab and three tissue culture rooms. Here’s your chance to visit this state-of-the-art facility.

Rapid-Fire Panels

Everyone will play a part in this special interactive discussion. A few people will be selected to serve as panelists, answering questions posed by the moderator and audience members. Be prepared for a discussion about incubation like you’ve never heard before!
