Legislative Matters: The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program in Jeopardy
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Technology administers the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. Through this competitive program, SBA ensures that the nation's small, high-tech, innovative businesses are a significant part of the federal government's research and development efforts. NJBIN Incubator News
Illumination Machines is moving into light emitting diodes (LED) light bulb design and licensing in response to the ban of incandescent light bulbs that will become effective in the United States on January 1, 2012. The company has produced an optical solution to converting LED technology into omnidirectional light distribution required to replace the incandescent bulb. With 50 percent of lighting fixtures requiring an omnidirectional beam, this solution is crucial to integrating efficient LED technology into the lighting industry. Illumination Machines produces its own intellectual property related to LED lighting and has 23 patents pending. (more...)
Investor Insight: Michael Doyle of Goldin Ventures
Early stage technology companies that have just completed the “birthing” and commercialization phase and are poised to enter the acceleration phase are at a very awkward stage. In all likelihood, they have had the financial support of angel investors up to this point, but their pending growth brings financial needs that are too great for angel investors and not large enough for venture capitalists. Michael Doyle, president of Goldin Ventures, sees that point in a business’s lifespan as his best window of investment opportunity. (more...)

Chief Counsel Testifies, Calls for Repeal of 1099 Requirement
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Chief Counsel for Advocacy Winslow Sargeant has called for the repeal of expanded Form 1099 reporting requirements, according to the December issue of The Small Business Advocate. He testified at a November hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, “Next Steps for Main Street: Reducing the Regulatory and Administrative Burdens on America’s Small Businesses,” which focused on regulatory issues that affect small businesses. New SBA Initiatives to Increase Lending to Underserved Communities
Since 2008, lenders have tightened their belts and reduced the flow of loans to small businesses. That cinch especially has strained traditionally underserved communities, including women, minorities and rural regions. Two new initiatives announced by the U.S. Small Business Administration in December are designed to help entrepreneurs overcome challenges and attain SBA-backed loans. (more...)

November’s midterm elections ushered in some big changes in Washington, D.C. In the aftermath of what President Barack Obama referred to as their “shellacking,” Democrats are trying to regroup. Meanwhile, Republicans are getting ready to assume leadership of the House of Representatives. By gaining control of the House, Republicans assured that they would hold the chairmanships and larger staffs on all House committees. We will outline details of these changes in an upcoming issue.
