NJBIN Incubator News
Aestus Therapeutics Inc. (Aestus), announced in February 2011 that it had initiated screening of patients for a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of its novel pain therapeutic, ATx08-001. This placebo-controlled, two-dose level study will test the efficacy of ATx08-001 in reducing the pain following an outbreak of shingles. (more...)

Innovation Coalition Advocates for National Support for Innovation

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to participate in the Innovation Coalition Fly-in in Washington, D.C, along with NJBIN President Jerry Creighton. The purpose of the event was to advocate for policy initiatives and legislation that will spur economic growth and job creation, specifically investment in technologies and infrastructure to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our message to legislators reinforced the points about advancing innovation that Jerry discusses in the main article of this issue. (more...)

As predicted, it's going to be a tough year for several programs of interest to the incubation industry. Recent budget votes have slashed key federal programs, and more cuts are expected.
The FY 2011 continuing resolution
After a long, drawn-out fight, Congress and the White House finally reached an agreement on the Fiscal Year 2011 budget. In a deal approved in early April, budget negotiators agreed to cut $40 billion in federal spending between now and Sept. 30. (more...)

$400 Million in New Commitments for Startup America
Startup America recently announced a new wave of commitments totaling more than $400 million from participants including Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Intuit and HP. The resources and programs for entrepreneurs are part of the Startup America Initiative, launched in January as part of President Barack Obama’snational strategy to stimulate economic growth and the creation of quality jobs.

Investing in Seed-Stage Companies Increased 40 Percent From 2009 to 2010

Results from the second annual survey of members of the National Association of Seed and Venture Funds by NASVF and Temple University’s Fox School of Business indicate that venture and angel investing in seed-stage companies increased approximately 40 percent between 2009 and 2010.
