NBIA Releases Updated Version of Best-Selling Business
Incubation Reference Book
December 20, 2004
ATHENS, Ohio—The National
Business Incubation Association (NBIA) today announced
the release of A Comprehensive Guide to Business
Incubation, Completely Revised 2nd Edition, the association’s
most thorough volume on business incubation to date.
NBIA produced the book with generous support from the
Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
First published in 1996, A Comprehensive Guide is widely recognized as one of
the most informative reference books for business incubation professionals. The
just-released second edition contains 71 chapters featuring advice from more
than 200 incubation professionals, many with more than 20 years of experience
in the field. The book is divided into four sections, each focusing on a different
aspect of business incubation: fundamentals of incubator development, best practices
in incubator management, working with clients and special topics in business
incubation.
“The tips, fresh ideas and insights from the many people we interviewed
will no doubt help incubation professionals and others make their entrepreneurship
support programs achieve their full potential,” said Meredith Erlewine,
NBIA director of publications. “NBIA is grateful to ARC for its generous
support of this project. Without this support, the revision would not have been
possible.”
Business incubation programs like those highlighted in the book catalyze the
process of starting and growing companies by providing entrepreneurs with the
expertise, networks and tools they need to make their ventures successful. In
2001 alone, North American incubators assisted more than 35,000 start-up companies
that provided full-time employment for nearly 82,000 workers and generated earnings
of more than $7 billion.
Erlewine and Ellen Gerl edited A Comprehensive Guide to Business Incubation,
Completely Revised 2nd Edition.
The National Business Incubation Association is the world’s leading organization
advancing business incubation and entrepreneurship. Since 1985, NBIA has provided
industry professionals with the information, education, advocacy and networking
resources to bring excellence to the process of assisting early-stage companies.
The Appalachian Regional Commission was established by Congress in 1965 to support
economic and social development in the Appalachian region. ARC’s mission
is to be a strategic partner and advocate for sustainable community and economic
