Achievements: The San Jose BioCenter gives emerging science and technology companies access to world-class facilities and support typically only available to larger firms. "Our goal is to be the premier commercialization ’destination location’: the most respected, comprehensive, flexible, turn-key operation to start an emerging science company in the Bay Area, throughout the United States and around the world," says Melinda Richter, the BioCenter’s executive director. And less than five years after opening, the incubator is well on its way.
Since opening in August 2004, the incubator has assisted 60 clients and graduated 14 companies. Six of the 14 BioCenter graduates have purchased or leased entire buildings and now employ between 30 and 400 people in the Bay Area. And it’s not just the clients and graduates that are doing well: In FY 2007-08, the BioCenter recorded a 43 percent growth in revenues by increasing its client and sponsor base and providing new value-added products and services.
The BioCenter now is undertaking a 36,500-square-foot expansion project to add second-stage lab space to its offerings. The expansion is set to be completed by September 2009.
