Wi-Ex develops, manufactures, markets and distributes zBoost®, a cell phone signal booster for home, office or car use. The device improves the strength of the signal for better voice and data transmission while maintaining the integrity of the cell phone carriers' networks. The zBoost is available for use in both domestic and international markets. Wi-Ex has grown from one zBoost version in 2005 to nine zBoost products today. Founded in 2002, the company moved into Gwinnett Innovation Park in Norcross, Ga., in 2006.
Incubator's role: Winner of the Gwinnett Innovation Park's business plan contest, Wi-Ex received $20,000 in cash and $25,000 in services — including flexible incubator space, marketing assistance, legal advice and accounting expertise. The incubator arranged a $1.5 million equity investment in Wi-Ex from Leland Strange, a successful serial entrepreneur who serves as an on-site executive at the Gwinnett Innovation Park and is CEO of the incubator's sponsor, Intelligent Systems. In addition to financial support, Strange also provided strategic, tactical and practical advice to the company in various areas, including offshore supplier contracts, senior-level hiring, and crafting and negotiating terms of an acquisition. "The financial support was critical for the company's growth and is a direct result of being an incubator client," says Wi-Ex CEO Lloyd Meese.
