WellDoc aims to improve the lives of patients with chronic diseases by developing innovative technology to help them manage their diseases. The firm provides mobile and Internet-based applications that allow healthcare to extend beyond the doctor's office, creating more freedom and a better quality of life for patients. WellDoc's DiabetesManager® System provides clinical and behavioral coaching for patients with type-2 diabetes based on their individual data, which allows healthcare providers to treat patients and provide feedback using the Internet. Recently, PC World named WellDoc as one of the 15 mobile applications that will matter in 2011.
Incubator's role: WellDoc entered the Emerging Technology Centers in 2006 and graduated in 2008. During that time, ETC facilitated introductions to state funding sources, increased company visibility though incubator awards and assisted in the identification of potential partners, which has allowed the business to grow and successfully market its products. "Specifically, introduction to the Maryland Industrial Partnership (MIPS) program resulted in WellDoc receiving almost $200,000 to support work with University of Maryland, Baltimore to evaluate the effectiveness of a patient-to-physician interactive diabetes management system," says Ryan Sysko, founder and CEO. In FY2010, the firm earned $8 million in revenues. Currently, WellDoc is working with insurance companies to make its products efficient and available to as many people as possible.
