A graduate of the University of Central Florida Business Incubation Program in Winter Springs, Fla., BDG Construction Services is a commercial general construction firm performing retail, medical, office and public construction projects throughout Florida. When they entered the incubator in 2009, founders Jay Brown and Kevin Guffee had the engineering experience and knowledge they needed to run a successful contracting company, but too few people knew about the great work BDG could do. With the help of the incubator staff, Guffee took on a larger business development role, actively networking with business and community leaders across the region to make people more aware of the company and its services. And the effort paid off. BDG’s reputation as a client-focused contractor capable of managing all aspects of a construction project quickly grew, and the company began winning bids steadily. Between 2009 when BDG entered the incubator and 2011 when it graduated, company revenues increased from $218,578 to $1 million.
Incubator’s role: As incubator clients, Brown and Guffee were eager to take advantage of the many resources offered by the UCFBIP/Winter Springs staff, including participating in individual strategy development sessions that helped the pair develop the business skills they needed to grow the business. “The largest benefit we received came in the form of various seminars offered on a broad range of relevant topics that were of no expense to us, including help and advice relating to sales, marketing, finance, recruiting and legal matters,” Guffee says. BDG’s founders also recognize the mentoring provided by Frank Watts, a professional sales guru, and Site Manager Esther Vargas-Davis as being instrumental in the firm’s success.
