After identifying an opening in the Nashville janitorial market for affordable, quality cleaning services, Darren and Karla Frieson founded Spring Clean Cleaning Service, a minority-owned, disabled veteran-operated janitorial company for local businesses and government agencies. Since then, Spring Clean Cleaning Service has set a new standard in service performance. The company provides on-site training for all employees. Weekly inspections, quarterly meetings with clients and annual customer-satisfaction surveys also help the firm track employee performance and ensure quality service, loyal customers and business referrals. Clients include the Department of Veteran Affairs (Knoxville, Tenn.), Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, Tyson McGhee National Guard, ITT Technical Institute, Metro Southeast and the Veterans Administration (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Incubator’s role: When Spring Clean Cleaning Service entered the Nashville Business Incubation Center in 2010, the company had tens of thousands in outstanding debts and owed back taxes. NBIC’s business financial counseling helped the company gain financial stability, and the incubator’s revolving loan program helped the company access the funds it needed to secure a subcontract agreement, obtain additional supplies and hire more personnel. NBIC also helped the company maximize business relationships, including creating a formal mentor/mentee agreement with the CEO of Premiere Building Maintenance Corp., which resulted in a $28,000/month contract. “With the help of NBIC, Spring Clean Cleaning Service successfully made the transition from a mom-and-pop operation to entrepreneurs building a large and viable business,” Darren Frieson says. “With business foundations in place, we were able to hire an office administrator and grew from a 400-square-foot office space to a 1,000-square-foot space within the Incubation Center.”
